Great illustration! Wonderful sense of story in this one and the black and white really adds to the (as you already said) magical feeling. I could definitely see this working well in a chapter book.
This illustration seemed to fit the new topic of Illustration Friday..."puzzled". Emilie wonders what happened to her sea serpent.

I agree, the black and white is great and feels old-fashioned and maybe a bit spooky or mysterious. Great job with the details and contrast.
